Books on North Africa 5: Across the Great Deserts

The following is an excerpt from a book called “Across the Great Deserts” written by P. T. Etherton (Colonel Percy Thomas Etherton).  It comes from Part One of the book that covers the Saharan Desert (the other parts cover the Kalahari and the Gobi Deserts).  It was published in 1948 and can be read at Hathi Trust Digital Library. Link.   This chapter covers the authors perception of the Foreign Legion and it’s role in conquering North Africa and the Saharan Desert.  I could not find a complete version of this book in digital format so maybe at a later date I might try to put together the entire first chapter of this book.  There are other books written by P. T. Etherton (mainly about Asia).
