Better Than Bullets: The Complete Adventures of Thibaut Corday and the Foreign Legion, Volume 1

Altus Press has just released Better Than Bullets: The Complete Adventures of Thibaut Corday and the Foreign Legion, Volume 1.  This is the first of four volumes that will contain all of Theodore Roscoe’s short stories featuring his fictional story teller Thibaut Corday.  Roscoe was one of the most prolific writers for the pulps during the 1920’s, 30’s and 40’s.  One of his favorite characters was the crusty Legionnaire Thibaut Corday who spun tall tales of his service with the Foreign Legion.  Some of the stories he recounts were about his own adventurers and some were about fantastical events that he witnessed.  These stories were all featured in Argosy magazine from 1929 to 1939.  Many of the beautiful color covers on Argosy that featured a Foreign Legionnaire were highlighting a Roscoe story about Thibaut Corday.  This volume features the first 6 Corday stories and you can order it now from the Altus Press website.  It is a slick 6″ x 9″ softcover, over 200 pages, that is lavishly illustrated throughout with the original pen & ink illustrations used when the stories first appeared in Argosy.  The other volumes will be released over the next three months and present all of the Corday stories in the order that they appeared in Argosy.  The stories included in this volume are:

  • Better than Bullets.
  • The Dance of the Seven Veils
  • An Eye for an Eye
  • The Death Watch
  • The Bearded Slayer
  • The Mutineer

Readers might also want to check out some of the other pulp story collections that can be found at Altus Press.  The publishers there bring together some of the best stories from the pulp era and assemble them into well edited collections.   They usually publish in soft cover but also have some hard cover collector’s versions and many are available in e-Book format.  The Pulp war gamer or those who play Pulp role playing games (Savage Worlds, Adventure, Two-Fisted Tales, D20 Pulp Heroes, etc.) will find a tremendous resource of inspirational material here.   Altus Press also has books that serve as references aids for popular long running pulp series and pulp authors (including one of Theodore Roscoe).
