Legion Pulp: Long Ears

Today we have a short pulp story written by Robert Carse.  This appeared in Argosy (18 September 1937).  It concerns an American muleteer fighting with the Legion against the Rif in the Atlas Mountains of Morocco.   Hawkey and his mule, a Kentucky bred, stubborn creature who packs a mean kick, find themselves surrounded and captured.  However, our hero’s life is spared in order for him to utilize a machine gun against the French forces.   Tables are turned on the Rif and in the end Hawkey is decorated for his courage…and his mule kicks him in the ass.
